Soldier from 100th Battalion dies in Iraq

A 23-year-old Army reservist assigned to the 100th Battalion, who was just seven weeks away from coming home, was killed Wednesday when his vehicle rolled over during a convoy operation in Iraq.
Spc. Casey L. Hills, of Salem, Ill., was assigned to the 100th Battalion, 442nd Infantry Regiment, which is one of the units attached to the Hawaii Army National Guard’s 29th Brigade Combat Team.
A Pacific Army Reserve spokesman at Fort Shafter said Hills was in a vehicle that was going to the Baghdad area from Camp Virginia in Kuwait when the accident occurred in Iraq.
Hills, who at one time served in the Illinois Army National Guard before he transferred to the Army Reserve, was assigned to the 100th Battalion’s Charlie Company after it was activated in August.
Hills was the second soldier belonging to the 29th Brigade to die on active duty during the latest deployment. The other death also was a vehicle accident and not related to combat.
Spc. Cwislyn K. Walter, 19, assigned to the 29th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, died Feb. 19 of injuries sustained in a single vehicle accident on Seventh Ring Road outside Kuwait City in Kuwait.
Next month, the 1,700 citizen soldiers of the 29th Brigade will complete its second wartime deployment since the Vietnam War in 1968. The soldiers will spend five days at Fort Hood before being released from active duty in August.
