The 4th of July holiday doesn’t happen until this weekend, but firefighters are already busy helping lost or stranded hikers.

One hiker spent last night on the ridge between Waiahole and Waikane valleys in Windward Oahu before being rescued.

Capt. Terry Seelig, fire department spokesman, said the hiker was forced to spend the night because of weather conditions.

“There is no dire situation,” Seelig added. “We are in contact via cell phone and we are just waiting for the clouds to clear.”

On the other side of the island fire rescue crews this morning also were called to help an injured hiker on the Manoa Falls trial near the Lyon Arboretum.

In Windward Oahu, firefighters worked through the night and used its helicopter and night vision goggles to bring down three hikers, one with a diabetic condition, from the Kuliouou Ridge Trail this morning.

The hikers were three teenage boys, one of whom has diabetes. Parents of that boy called firefighters at 6:30 p.m. when the three did not return as planned.

The terrain and loss of daylight prevented the rescue crews from reaching the hikers yesterday. With the help of the department’s  helicopter, firefighters were able to come within 25 feet of the three hikers and drop a bag containing medication for the hiker with diabetes and some fluids for dehydration.

A fire department rescue specialist was later flown by helicopter and rappelled down to join the three hikers. He brought more supplies including warm clothing and additional lighting with him at 1 a.m. and the operations were suspended.

The rescue operations were resumed at 5:41 a.m. and the three hikers were brought taken off the ridge safely at 6:21 a.m.
