Swine flu cases top 600 in Hawaii

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported today 616 confirmed cases of novel H1N1 Influenza A (swine flu) in Hawaii--151 more cases than it listed last week.
The figure also has climbed since Monday when the state Department of Health confirmed a total of 545 cases of the infection, including a woman on Oahu who died with swine flu and underlying medical conditions.
Another adult also was reported hospitalized with the novel influenza on Oahu.
The outbreak began here on May 5 with three cases, including a Maui resident who was hospitalized and recovered in Washington state before returning home.
The state health agency is no longer reporting the number of H1N1 cases in Hawaii on its Web site because the infection is spreading through the community, similar to normal flu viruses.
But it is reporting the figures to the CDC which lists them on Friday. They were reported today because of the Fourth of July observance tomorrow.
