Honolulu's Michelle Wie entered the final hole today at the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic with a chance to share the lead with a birdie, but closed with a costly double bogey instead that dropped her to a tie for seventh at 8-under 134.
Wie shot a 2-under 69 today that left her three shots off the pace of co-leaders Sarah Kemp (63) and Laura Diaz (67) at the LPGA Tour event in Sylvania, Ohio. Wie carded six birdies, two bogeys and the costly double at the last.
She played with fellow tour rookie Jiyai Shinn (67—133), who won for the fifth time in 11 months last week, and Natalie Gulbis (65—133). Wie opened with two birdies and a bogey on the front to go out in 1-under 33 on the par-71 Highland Meadows Golf Club course. In yesterday's opening round, the Punahou School graduate started at the 10th and carded five birdies on the back nine.
The Stanford University sophomore began today's closing nine with back-to-back birdies, before bogeying the par-4 15th for a second straight day. The 19-year-old bounced back with birdies at Nos. 16 and 17, before the double-bogey 7 at the 18th.
Wie hit eight of 14 fairways and 15 greens in regulation, averaging 265.75 yards off the tee for the tournament. She needed 31 putts after managing only 27 in her opening round.
