Gov. Linda Lingle says Hawaii's economy continues to worsen and state government workers should brace for layoffs.
New figures show that Hawaii is now facing a shortfall of about $900 million over the next two years, about $170 million worse than previously estimated.
That kind of deficit could result in additional layoffs beyond the 2,500 previously predicted, or it could mean employees will have to take pay cuts exceeding the 14 percent Lingle sought from furloughs.
Lingle says she will likely appeal a judge's ruling that she doesn't have the right to force employees to take unpaid days off, and she will continue to seek furloughs in negotiations with labor unions.
