Gov. Linda Lingle and her Cabinet plan to take two furlough days a month, starting in August.
“It simply is a matter of shared sacrifice,” Lingle said at a news conference today announcing the furloughs.
The furlough days will be taken on top of the 5 percent pay cut that already has been enacted on top level executives.
The governor says the public is not likely to see any disruption in government services from her executive order.
The furloughs are meant to set an example as the she seeks concessions from labor unions and is considering layoffs.
The furloughs will save the state $1.2 million over the next two years, a small step toward making up for the state’s $786 million projected budget deficit.
The mandatory days off apply to 42 executive branch officials including herself, her 17 Cabinet members, her senior advisers and departmental deputies.
When combined with a previous 5 percent pay cut, the furloughs amount to a 14 percent pay reduction.
