Retired Maj. Gen. Alexis Lum, who served as the state adjutant general from 1983-1991, died over the weekend. He was 82.
After his retirement from the state and the Army National Guard in 1991, Lum went to work as military liaison for Sen. Daniel Inouye.
In a written statement, Inouye said today: “Alex Lum was a great American patriot, serving our nation in war and in peace. I was privileged to have Gen. Lum serve as my special assistant for military Affairs from June 1991- December 2007.
“He played a key role in coordinating programs and policies important to the military services in the Pacific. I owe him a lot. The people of Hawaii and our nation benefited greatly from his work.”
He served in World War II after being drafted in 1945 and also in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Lum graduated from the University of Hawaii and was commissioned as an Army second lieutenant in 1950 through its ROTC program,
Lum joined the Army National Guard in 1953 and when its 29th Brigade was activated in 1968 he served in Vietnam as the executive officer of the 31st Engineer Battalion.
After the Vietnam War, Lum served as commander of the Army National Guard’s Headquarters Installation Command and in January 1980 was appointed as head of the Hawaii Army National Guard.
In civilian life, Lum work from 1954 to 1982 at the Naval Ammunition Depot which is now the Lualualei Naval Magazine while serving as a traditional Hawaii Army National Guard officer.
He is married to the former Leimomi Mookini and they have three children, Angela, Alexia and Oliver.
