Many state office buildings will be shut down two Fridays a month because of the furloughs just approved by the largest state workers union, it was announced today.
In a memo distributed this morning, State Comptroller Russ Saito said that starting Friday "the department will be observing furlough days on two Fridays each month for the remainder of the fiscal year 2010," which runs through June 30.
The buildings will be closed, the air conditioning shut off, and DAGS will not service the buildings on furlough days, he wrote.
The list at first included Capitol, the Health Department building (Kinau Hale), the state archives, the state office tower, No. 1 Capitol District, and Capitol Center. At noon, however, the Governor's Office announced that the Capitol would remain open and that a revised list of closed buildings will be released.
Yesterday, the Hawaii Government Employees Association announced that all but one of their units have voted in favor of a new state contract that includes unpaid furlough days. The final HGEA unit completes voting on the new contract today.
Lingle's office also said exempt excluded employees who have been taking three furlough days per month since Sept. 16, will now conform to two furlough days a month as reflected in the new HGEA contract.
