South Maui beaches in and around Kalama Park were re-opened as of noon today, following a shark attack yesterday morning.

A 54-year-old man, who suffered lacerations on his right thigh and ankle while surfing about 100 to 200 yards offshore at the "Kalama Bowls" surf break, was treated and released from the hospital. The beaches in the area were closed yesterday.

A county helicopter saw two sharks in the area early this morning and the beaches were kept closed. But a later flight found no sharks and the beaches were re-opened at noon, state officials said.
