Hawaii's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate inched up one-tenth of a percentage point from a month ago to 7.2 percent in September as the trade, transportation and utilities sector lost 900 jobs.

The state jobless rate, which hit a more than 31-year high in May at 7.4 percent before easing, has now risen for two straight months.

Hawaii's unemployment rate a year ago was 4.4 percent while the U.S. unemployment rate last month was 9.8 percent.

On an island-by-island basis, whose rates are not seasonally adjusted, Oahu's jobless rate rose to 6.3 percent from 6.0 percent, Maui increased to 9.5 percent from 9.1 percent and the Big Island rose to 10.8 percent from 10.3 percent. Kauai remained at 9.6 percent, while Molokai's rate slipped to 13.9 percent from 14.6 percent the previous month, Lanai decreased to 11.1 percent from 11.8 percent
