Tropical Storm Neki, downgraded from a hurricane overnight, is passing over the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands this evening with 65 mph maximum sustained winds and seas up to 20 feet.
The Central Pacific Hurricane said a tropical storm warning is in effect for the Papahanaumokuakea National Monument from Nihoa Island to French Frigate Shoals to Maro Reef. The center of the storm is passing between Necker Island and French Frigate Shoals.
At 5 p.m., the storm was about 380 miles west of Lihue and about 80 miles east-southeast of French Frigate Shoals. Tropical storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles from Neki.
Neki is moving toward the north-northeast near 5 mph and this motion is expected to continue over the next 48 hours.
Forecasters said continued weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours and rainfall amounts of 6 to 10 inches can be expected along Neki's path.
The storm is expected to continue on a north-northeast path that will keep it far from the main Hawaiian islands. However, a tropical storm warning is in effect for offshore waters of the main islands beyond 40 nautical miles out to 240 nautical miles.
