Big Island police identify boy who died in fall

HILO>> Big Island police have identified a boy who died of injuries received in a fall as 17-year-old Shea Walling of Honokaa.

Police say Walling fell about 80 to 90 feet down Mamaewa Gulch off of Kohala Mountain Road in South Kohala on Thursday. He slipped while trying to climb out of the gulch, falling to the bottom.

A 16-year-old boy hiking companion also fell, suffering cracked ribs and several scrapes.

Fire rescue personnel extracted Walling and two hiking companions from the gulch.

Walling was transported to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. The case has been classified a coroner's inquest.
