A 31-year-old woman died today from injuries sustained in a single-car crash in Paia, Maui, last night.
Police identified her as Gianna M. Mitchell of Lahaina.
At about 10:12 p.m, Mitchell was travleing southbound on Baldwin Avenue in a 1996 Toyota Corolla when she lost control of the vehicle. Police said she crossed the centerline, drove onto the shoulder and struck a dirt embankment before the vehicle rolled onto its side.
Mitchell was partially ejected and pinned under the vehicle. She was critically injured and taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center where she died this morning.
Police said Mitchell was not wearing a seat belt and that the investigation is ongoing.
This is the 19th traffic-related fatality for Maui County compared with 17 at the same time last year.
