Police shot and critically injured a car-theft suspect who allegedly injured two officers as he tried to escape by ramming his way out of the drive-through line at the Waikele Center KFC.

The suspect, a 23-year-old man, was shot repeatedly this afternoon and taken to a hospital in critical condition, police said.

One officer was in serious condition and the other was in stable condition at the hospital, according to police.

According to Capt. Richard Robinson, at about 12:20 p.m. officers from the Pearl City station went to the KFC on a tip that a stolen Dodge Durango SUV was in the area.

Officers walked toward the vehicle, which was in the drive-through line. The suspect, who was behind the wheel, started ramming the vehicles behind and in front as he tried to escape, and also struck two officers, Robinson said.

"At that point, officers opened fire and the suspect was struck," he said. "Multiple shots were fired."

The suspect was unarmed.

Robinson noted that he used a "significant amount of force" as he tried to ram the vehicle out of the drive-through line.

A second suspect, a passenger in the vehicle, suffered minor injuries and was treated and released into police custody at the scene, authorities said.

Police internal affairs officer are investigating, which is standard with such incidents.
