Honolulu police are investigating how a 45-year-old Waianae man died while in police custody.

At 10:15 p.m. Monday, police responded to a call at an apartment complex where  John F. Victorino was armed and threatening people. Police said he was paranoid after he reportedly used street drugs.

After a brief struggle, officers subdued Victorino and he later became unresponsive, according to a police report. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said Victorino had a history of hypertension but did not take his medication and had not followed up with his physician. Methamphetamine and marijuana were recovered from his apartment.

The cause of Victorino's death has been deferred pending investigation, according to the city Department of Medical Examiner.
