The new U.S. Attorney for Hawaii has formally taken the oath of office to the applause of federal and state judicial and law enforcement officials and the staff with whom she will work.

Florence Nakakuni was sworn in today by Chief U.S. District Judge Susan Oki Mollway.

She has been acting as the head of Hawaii's federal prosecutor's office for several weeks since her appointment by President Barack Obama was confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

An assistant U.S. attorney in Hawaii for the past 24 years, Nakakuni is the first woman to lead the office.

Several colleagues praised her as fair, diligent and capable. Her sense of humor and memorable laugh also were cited.

She succeeds Edward Kubo Jr., who served in the post since 2001.
