A Coast Guard C-130 plane and Coast Guard Cutter Galveston Island were on their way tonight to assist a 41-foot sailboat that lost its mast in rough wind and seas about 50 miles off the Big Island.
The Coast Guard received the distress call at about 8:30 p.m. Five people are on board, but no injuries were reported, said Coast Guard spokesman Lt. John Titchen.
The boat also lost electricity and is stranded west of Kailua Kona, Titchen said.
The C-130 will monitor the sailboat and assist in communications. The Honolulu-based Cutter Galveston Island should arrive on scene early Sunday morning to either pick up the boaters or tow the vessel back to shore, Titchen said.
