Category 2 Hurricane Carlos heads toward Central Pacific

Hurricane Carlos strengthened to a Category 2 hurricane this morning, with maximum sustained winds of up to 105 mph, but was no immediate threat to Hawaii, the National Weather Service forecasters said.
It was less than 2,000 miles southeast of Hilo, moving west at 6 mph and hurricane force winds extend up to 10 miles from the storm’s center.
The storm is not expected to strengthen much tonight and it will gradually decrease in intensity over the next day or two, the weather service predicts.
Forecasts have it moving into the Central Pacific this weekend, but the current forecast track has it far south of the Hawaiian islands.
The storm began as a hurricane Thursday off the coast of Baja, Calif., and was downgraded to a tropical storm Sunday, only to regain hurricane status at 3 a.m. today. It quickly gained strength to a Category 2 storm by 11 a.m.
