Kauai drowning victim identified

By Star-Bulletin staff

POSTED: 12:30 a.m. HST, Oct 03, 2008

The Pennsylvania man who died yesterday after being rescued from the water off Poipu Beach was identified as James Dunkelberger, 73, of York, according to a Kauai County news release.

Dunkelberger was rescued from the ocean while snorkeling at Prince Kuhio Beach Park yesterday, but collapsed on the beach and died at Wilcox Hospital.

He had been snorkeling in front of the Lawai Beach Resort at about 9:30 a.m. A surfer, who noticed the man was in distress, brought him to shore, but he collapsed moments later. A bystander performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until emergency crews arrived and took him to the hospital.
