Hawaii Winter Baseball plans to not have a league next year, an HWB spokesman said today. Major League Baseball general managers voted at their winter meetings last week to consolidate minor-league off-season operations in Arizona, which means top-level prospects are no longer available for HWB. That means no league in 2009. "At this point, yes, plans are there won't be a league," spokesman Kyle Galdeira said. "We won't have the quality of players available. Duane (HWB owner Kurisu) doesn't want to do it without the quality." HWB offices will remain open and "pursue other opportunities," Galdeira said. That's what HWB did when the league shut down after the 1997 season after five years. It restarted in 2006. "It was a grand experience bringing the thrill of pro baseball back to the islands," Kurisu said in a news release today.
