Punahou School has a new athletic director.

The school's administration announced to staff today it has picked Jeaney Garcia to replace Tom Holden, who retires at the end of this school year.

Punahou president Jim Scott wrote in the announcement that Garcia has accepted the position.

"I think she's ready for a bigger pond, ready to join a community such as Punahou," Scott said in a phone interview late this afternoon.

Garcia is athletic director at Brentwood School in Los Angeles. She has 18 years experience in education and degrees from Kansas State and Cal Poly Pomona. She has participated in and coached cross country, track and field, basketball, softball and volleyball.

Last spring, Sports Illustrated magazine named Punahou's the top high school athletic department in the United States.

Garcia, who was interviewed over the weekend, was en route to the mainland today and not immediately available for comment.
