Police standoff ends peacefully
A 63-year-old businessman facing eviction held police at bay for nearly two hours yesterday in Kalihi before surrendering peacefully.At about 10:15 a.m. a civilian process server handed the man, the owner of Pacific Professional Products on 523 Mokuea St., an eviction notice. The man indicated that he was going to kill himself, and police were called.
Dozens of officers from the Kalihi district and the Specialized Services Division responded because the man had several firearms registered to him. The area around the business, which does detailing and body work for cars and boats, was closed off for about two hours.
The man surrendered at 12:05 p.m. and was taken to the Queen's Medical Center for treatment, although he was not injured. The building's landlord said the man was two months behind in rent and owed more than $10,000. Police said the man did not have any of his firearms with him during the incident.

Officers discover pair of dead bodies
A 40-year-old man and 36-year-old woman were found dead yesterday evening at a Waianae house.Police were called to the home to check on the occupants' welfare. Officers discovered the body of the woman in the living room and the man's body in the enclosed garage at 5:02 p.m.
Police said one death was classified as a suicide and the other as an unattended death.
The homicide detail is investigating the case. Police provided no further details last night.

Victim fingers teen in robbery, assault
Police arrested a 17-year-old boy Thursday who allegedly assaulted and robbed a pedestrian Wednesday on a Waikiki sidewalk.Police said that at about 6 p.m., a 21-year-old man was walking when he was pushed from behind by the suspect. The suspect allegedly took cash from the victim's pocket and fled.
The victim returned to Waikiki Thursday, saw the suspect in the same area and demanded his money back. The suspect then assaulted the victim, police said. Officers arrived and arrested the suspect on suspicion of second-degree robbery and third-degree assault.

Suspect allegedly bites HPD officer
Police arrested a 46-year-old man who allegedly punched and bit an officer Thursday in Kailua.The officer was investigating a damaged mailbox in Enchanted Lake shortly before 11 a.m., police said. Based on a description in an all-points bulletin, the officer found a possible suspect on Akumu Street, police said.
When the suspect was questioned, he allegedly punched the officer in the head and bit him on the arm. Other officers detained the suspect, who was arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer.

Patricia Mulleitner has been missing since Wednesday morning. She had been visiting a family member at a medical facility at 8 a.m. Her family is concerned for her safety, and she is in need of medication, police said.
She is described as 5 feet 3 inches tall, weighing 200 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a black jacket and dark-colored pants and carrying a black handbag. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 911 or the Missing Persons Detail at 529-3115.

Masked gunmen storm restaurant
Police are looking for two men who entered a Waipahu restaurant armed and wearing masks yesterday morning and attempted to rob the establishment but fled empty-handed.Police said that at about 5:55 a.m. yesterday, two armed men in masks entered the restaurant through a rear door.
One of the men stayed just inside the door and allegedly briefly pointed a handgun at a female employee, then closed the door, leaving her inside, police said.
The employees screamed when they saw the men, police said. The pair fled through a back door, taking nothing, police said.

Building blaze's cause unknown
A building in Kailua-Kona was struck by fire yesterday morning, resulting in $70,000 in damage.Damage to the interior of the building and its contents was extensive, but no other buildings nearby were damaged and no one was injured, fire officials said. Fire officials said the cause of the fire remained undetermined yesterday.
No one was inside the building, which was locked and bolted from the outside, at the time of the fire, fire officials said. The Hulikoa Drive building is owned by Hawaii Modular Space.
The fire was reported at 8:25 a.m., and firefighters reached the scene at 8:39 a.m. The 15 firefighters had the blaze extinguished by 8:46 a.m.
Downed power line blamed for flames
WAILUKU » A brush fire that burned 1,000 acres on Lanai and forced the evacuation of 600 people was caused by a downed power line, Maui County spokeswoman Mahina Martin said.Martin said the power line fell probably due to high winds.
The fire was reported close to noon Tuesday and forced the evacuation of visitors and workers from the Four Seasons Resort Lanai at Manele Bay and authorities to block the road leading to Lanai City.
No injuries or damage to the structures were reported, but 13 Maui firefighters and three helicopters were brought to the island to help in fighting the blaze. County officials announced at about noon Thursday that the fire was contained.
