High school senior wins ukulele contest

Chris Salvador of Aiea, a senior at Christian Academy, won the Aloha Tower Marketplace's third annual ukulele contest recently, beating out 21 others.

He received a Kamaka concert ukulele valued at $800 and a case from the Hawaiian Ukulele Co. Second place went to Kirk Shimabukuro of Hilo, and third, to David Ardo of Manoa.

Law firm Damon Key Leong Kupchak Hastert will make financial contributions to 18 nonprofit organizations in celebration of the firm's 45th anniversary.

The nonprofits were selected by the firm's attorneys based, in part, on their personal involvement with the organizations.

They include the American Heart Association, American Red Cross - Hawaii Chapter, Easter Seals Hawaii, Goodwill Industries of Hawaii, Hawaii Ballet Theatre for Youth, Hawaiian Humane Society, Institute for Human Services, Kailua United Methodist Church, Legal Aid Society of Hawaii, Le Jardin Academy, Lyon Arboretum Association, Make-A-Wish Hawaii Inc., Mid-Pacific Institute, Palolo Chinese Home, Punahou School, Sierra Club - Hawaii Chapter, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the YWCA of Oahu.

As part of its celebration, firm members and their families will also assist Hui Ku Maoli Ola, a native Hawaiian plant nursery, with a wetland restoration project in Kailua.

"Shining Stars" runs Monday through Thursday.
