Maui Community College's gift to help buy digital X-ray device

The Lifeguard Charitable Fund is giving $5,000 to Maui Community College to buy digital X-ray equipment for the Maui Oral Health Center's Mobil Dental Van, the college said in a news release. The Maui Oral Health Center, which opened in 2002, provides general dental care, nutrition counseling and health screenings for low-income families. It also serves as a classroom for MCC students enrolled in the dental assisting program.

A $414,952 grant has been awarded to the East-West Center from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health & Human Development to support an ongoing study of family change in Japan. The research program, "Innovations in Early Life Course Transitions," examines changes in attitudes toward nontraditional family behaviors that have affected family life in the past half century.

The University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine at Kakaako has been recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design complex. A plaque was awarded to the school in a recent ceremony certifying it is a healthy and environmentally responsible facility.

Brian N. Sunada, First Hawaiian Bank senior vice president, has joined the Friends of the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii's board. He is a past president and former board member of the American Cancer Society's Honolulu Unit.

Castle Medical Center has received the highest recognition from the Hawaii Award of Excellence program for its organizational performance -- the 'Oihana Maika'i (Endeavors of Excellence) Purple Lei Award.
