Exchange program gets big grant

The East-West Center has received a three-year $275,000 grant from the Henry Luce Foundation that will continue support for the Korea-United States Journalists Exchange program, now in its fifth year. Six to eight journalists from each country study the political, security, economic, cultural and social issues of the other country.

The Pacific Cancer Foundation, which supports cancer patients, survivors and their families, received $5,000 from the Bank of Hawaii Foundation.

Shriners Hospital for Children received nearly $13,000 from Certified Residential Specialists (CRS) to help fund its new children's hospital, scheduled to open by June 2010. Other local businesses that have supported the "Every Step Is a Victory" capital campaign to raise $14 million include Central Pacific Bank, Hawaiian Airlines and Sheraton Waikiki.

Students at Holy Family Catholic Academy donated $1,000 collected in a coin drive, plus a truckload of household and personal items, for Kupuna (Senior) Care Packages to help Lanakila Meals on Wheels. Some 400 students participated in two community service learning projects in November and December to benefit Lanakila.

The Battleship Missouri Memorial has appointed Keven M. Williamson its supervisor of volunteers. He most recently was education director and volunteer coordinator at Bishop Museum's Hawaii Maritime Center. Williamson also served as director of the Mature Volunteer Organization's Elderhostel Program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
