Kids earn invites to youth camp

The Japan-America Society of Hawaii has selected eight 11-year-old students statewide to take part in a two-week youth camp in July at the Asia-Pacific Children's Convention in Fukuoka, Japan. More than 300 children from more than 40 countries will participate as junior ambassadors. The boys include Garrett Cho of Ahuimanu Elementary School; John Diehm, Aina Haina; Wesley Lum, Pearl Ridge; and Logan Takeda, Mililani Mauka. The girls are Jordan Apela of Maile Bible Church and School; Haley Honda, Pearl Ridge; Sophia Krivatsy, Aina Haina; and Samantha Ojeda, Palisades.

Ronald N.S. Ho, president of the engineering firm Ronald N.S. Ho & Associates Inc., and Judith Pyle, president of Judith Dion Pyle and Associates, a financial services company based in Middleton, Wis., have been elected to the University of Hawaii Foundation's board of trustees.

The Salvation Army gave its Partners in Community Service Awards to David Arita, president of American Carpet One, who received the Outstanding Corporate Partner Award for almost two decades of leadership on the Army's advisory board; Women's Auxiliary of Honolulu, for more than 40 years of hosting events and fundraisers, including the annual Celebrity Fashion show; and Joe and Shirley Recca, who have provided music and hula entertainment at the Army's annual Thanksgiving dinner at the Neal Blaisdell Center for 18 years.

 

"Shining Stars" runs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
