Spartans' Lightsy relishes his Hawaii homecoming

San Jose State's appearance at Aloha Stadium tomorrow has made for a hectic week for Steve Lightsy.

The Spartans lineman and Kahuku graduate has been busy trying to find tickets for the close to 50 family members and friends expected to attend the game with the Warriors and has had Sept. 27 circled on his calendar for a while.

"I did, I'm not going to lie. It's the game I was looking forward to," Lightsy said. "I haven't played in front of my family since high school, so that makes this a game real meaningful for me."

Tomorrow's game will mark a homecoming for both Lightsy, a junior lineman from Hauula, and sophomore linebacker Braden Storaasli (Damien '06) of Kapolei.

Lightsy, a junior college All-American at Fresno City College, transferred to San Jose State this season and has seen time on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Lightsy is second on the depth chart at right guard and has played on the defensive front in goal-line situations this season.

"Being on the defensive side is completely different," Lightsy said. "It's even more of an adrenaline rush."

Storaasli, a classmate of UH running back Kealoha Pilares at Damien, is a contributor on all of the Spartans' special teams units and earned a scholarship this semester.

"I was kind of shocked," Storaasli said of the meeting informing him of the scholarship. "That's what I was striving for."

Storaasli, who has four tackles this season, is an aviation major at SJSU and was an Academic All-WAC selection last year.

» Navy senior quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada (Kapolei '04) completed five of eight passes for 89 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 47 yards in a 23-21 victory over Rutgers.

» Weber State sophomore quarterback Cameron Higgins (Saint Louis '06) threw for 380 yards and four touchdowns and also scored on a 4-yard run in a 32-27 win over Sacramento State. Tight end Cody Nakamura (Baldwin '06) caught one of the touchdowns and finished with five receptions for 102 yards.

» Oregon sophomore quarterback Jeremiah Masoli (Saint Louis '06) completed three of four passes for 27 yards and had a 9-yard run before leaving in the first quarter of a 37-32 loss to Boise State with a mild concussion.

» Montana-Western freshman quarterback Micah Mamiya (Saint Louis '08) was named the Co-Offensive Player of the Week of the Frontier Conference after completing 22 of 36 passes for 365 yards and four touchdowns in a 35-31 win over Eastern Oregon.

Men's Soccer

» Gonzaga forward Tye Perdido (Seabury Hall '06) was named MVP of the Gonzaga Nike Soccer Classic after helping the Zags win the tournament for the first time in three tries. Perdido scored two goals in the opener against Missouri-Kansas City, including the game-winner in overtime to give the Zags a 3-2 win.

Women's Soccer

» Pacific (Ore.) sophomore goalkeeper Erin Ichimura (Baldwin '07) was named the Northwest Conference Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week. Ichimura recorded three shutouts in a row, making 15 saves and not allowing a goal in 28 shots. Ichimura ranks second in the conference with 37 saves.

Women's Volleyball

» Nevada sophomore Kylie Harrington (St. Francis '07) had five kills, seven digs and two blocks and freshman setter Tatiana Santiago (Kamehameha '08) added six assists and two digs as the Wolf Pack were swept by New Mexico State.

» Oregon State junior setter Camilla Ah-Hoy (Kahuku '06) had 45 assists and seven digs to lead the Beavers to an upset of No. 13 Wisconsin, beating the Badgers 25-23, 19-25, 16-25, 25-16, 15-13. Later the same day, Ah-Hoy had 43 assists, nine digs, five block assists and three kills in a four-set win over Marquette.

Men's Basketball

» Colorado School of Mines senior Kyle Pape (Iolani '05) was named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference preseason first team. The 6-foot Pape was the only player to start all 29 games for CSM last season. He finished second in the conference in scoring (20.9 ppg) and shot 89 percent from the free-throw line.
