Castle comes crashing down on McKinley

Castle made sure to put on a show for its fans on homecoming night.

The Knights racked up 364 yards of offense in the first half - and posted 30 points in the second quarter alone - to steamroll McKinley last night 40-0.

Castle (4-2, 3-1 Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East) stayed among the leaders in its division and remained in line for a playoff berth. The road to the postseason became tougher, though, for the Tigers (1-5, 1-3), who were held to 40 yards of offense thanks in part to several bad snaps. McKinley must avoid landing in the bottom two of seven teams in the OIA Red East, and has two games remaining to improve its standing.

"We got the big plays, our defense played well, anytime you get a shutout like that it's big," Castle coach Nelson Maeda said. "Offensively our quarterback (Blake Rapozo) made some real good decisions, Shaydon (Kehano) made some big catches. This is a great win."

Castle earned running time on the clock for the entire second half by taking a 40-0 lead at the break.

The Knights notched their seventh win over McKinley in the teams' last nine meetings behind flashy plays from Rapozo and Kehano.

In the signature play of the game, the Knights had a snap go over Rapozo's head late in the second period. The senior lefty recovered the ball in the end zone, rolled to his left and fired a pass on the run to Kehano, who caught the ball at a standstill at about the McKinley 40 and outsprinted his man to the end zone.

"I got it and ran for my life," said Rapozo, a left-handed senior. "I saw Shaydon, pointed at him to go longer, and he went and got it."

"It was beautiful," said Kehano, a 5-foot-11 junior. "A spiral on the run, perfect pass."

Kehano also drew loud cheers for catching a Rapozo pass and turning it into a score with some elusive and powerful yards-after-catch running. He broke a group tackle against three defenders and strutted into the end zone for a 30-yard score in the second quarter.

"I just kept pumping my legs," Kehano said.

Slotback Hans Reppuhn also had an impressive run in the first period, taking a handoff on a reverse and stiff-arming a defender before balancing along the left sideline, cutting infield at the 30 and evading tackles for a 57-yard score.

"They executed, the ball bounced their way ... it seemed every mistake they had turned into a positive," McKinley coach Bobby Grey said. "We just gotta bounce back, get one of these next two games - or both - against Kaimuki and Roosevelt."
