R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane made his first career start in Leonard's place and posted five tackles and recovered a fumble.
"One guy went down and I had to fill in," Kiesel-Kauhane said. "We were ready for this game, no matter adversities, the crowd, whatever. We came to play today. ... This game we brought it all together."
Head coach Greg McMackin said linebacker Brashton Satele suffered a separated shoulder, but continued to play through the injury.
"We practiced overtime (situations) last week," McMackin said. "We thought the San Jose State game might come down to overtime and it was close."
The Warriors also scored an overtime win over Fresno State in 1999 at Aloha Stadium, which secured the Western Athletic Conference title for Hawaii.
UH has also won in three of its last four visits to Bulldog Stadium.
"This place is the hardest place to play (in the WAC)," UH kicker Dan Kelly said.
Kurt Osaki, the designer of the school's H logo, was among the function's organizers when the HCCNC started putting the tailgates together about a decade ago, along with then-associate athletic director Jim Donovan.
"It's grown so much and so many different people get involved, all volunteers, and I think we can do a lot more," said Osaki, who has offices in Oakland and Honolulu. "I think we can do this all over the United States wherever we travel."
Mathis was a Warrior killer, rushing for 229 yards in the 2005 game, a 27-13 Bulldog win at Aloha Stadium.
Miller's 80-yard touchdown run tied for eighth-longest in Fresno State history. And Ryan Mathews, the Bulldogs' leading rusher, sat out the game with an injured knee.
