Sharks stick CaneFires in HWB

Cardinals prospect Jim Rapoport hit a home run over the right-field fence at Les Murakami Stadium to lead the Honolulu Sharks to a 7-3 win over West Oahu in Hawaii Winter Baseball yesterday.

Rapoport, who hit only three home runs in 76 games in the minor leagues this year, finished with four RBIs and two runs scored.

The Sharks improved to 5-2-1, and the CaneFires dropped to 5-3. Both teams have the day off today and return to the field tomorrow.

» Roger Kieschnick of the San Francisco Giants hit a two-run home run and Dodgers prospect Alfredo Silverio drove in two runs as the Waikiki Beach Boys (4-5) defeated the defending champion North Shore Honu 6-4 at Hans L'Orange Park. The Honu fell to 2-6 for the season.

HPU's Balanay is player of the week

Hawaii Pacific sophomore middle hitter Kelly Balanay was picked as the PacWest Volleyball player of the week yesterday.

Balanay, of San Diego, posted an average of 4.0 points per game in three victories for the Sea Warriors last week, hitting .390 with 44 kills and 14 blocks.
