BeachBoys reach HWB final
Chicago Cubs prospect Marquez Smith hit a two-run home run with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to put the Waikiki BeachBoys over the Honolulu Sharks 5-4 last night at Les Murakami Stadium.The BeachBoys earned the chance to play the West Oahu CaneFires for the league championship at 1 p.m. today at Les Murakami Stadium.
Smith had struggled throughout the HWB season, hitting .188 in 112 at bats before his season-saving blast, which was the only hit surrendered by Sharks pitcher Kyle Drabek in 41/3 innings.
Fellow Cubs prospect Jeremy Papelbon worked through a shaky bottom of the ninth inning for his league-leading seventh save. Papelbon loaded the bases but forced Colorado prospect Darin Holcomb to fly out to center field.
Rainbow Wahine suffer second loss
Toledo overcame Hawaii 67-61 yesterday at the Bank of Hawaii Invitational women's basketball tournament in Hilo. It was the Rainbow Wahine's second loss of the tournament.Keisha Kanekoa led UH with 17 points, and Toledo's Tanika Mays was the high scorer with 20.
The Rainbow Wahine committed 17 turnovers and shot just 35 percent (24-for-69).
Sijsling reaches singles, doubles finals
The Netherlands' Igor Sijsling will advance to the finals in both singles and doubles at the USTA Honolulu Futures after winning two semifinal matches yesterday.Sijsling defeated Russia's Andrey Kumantsov 6-7 (2), 6-3, 7-5 and teamed up with Matt Reid for a 6-3, 6-3 win over Christoph Palmanshofer and Pablo Pires De Almeida.
In the final matches today, Sijsling takes on Daniel Yoo and Sijsling and Reid meet James Ludlow and Andreas Siljestrom.
Kajiyama, Anderson headline QB Club
The Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon tomorrow will feature Hawaii football academic manager Brian Kajiyama and former professional athletic trainer Matt Anderson.Kajiyama is a PhD student at UH and was formerly a graduate assistant coach.
Anderson has been an athletic trainer for various professional teams in Arizona and is the son of Quarterback Club treasurer James Anderson.
The Star Bulletin's Dave Reardon will join Kajiyama and Anderson as a guest speaker at the 11:30 a.m. luncheon.
Mid-Pacific pitcher to play for Aztecs
Mid-Pacific pitcher Matthew McDaniel has signed a letter of intent to play baseball at San Diego State.McDaniel, who was 5-1 with an 1.11 ERA last season, also had scholarship offers from Hawaii and Washington State. His final choice was between the Rainbows and the Aztecs.
"I love both campuses and I love the atmosphere in San Diego," the left-hander said. "It just came down to growing up. I've been here so long already."
The senior will join former Owls catcher and Star-Bulletin co-position player of the year Aaron Fujiki, who is now a freshman at SDSU.
Hawaii-Hilo women down Chaminade
Hawaii-Hilo opened its women's basketball season with a 78-52 home win over Chaminade last night. The Vulcans scored 49 points in the first half for a 26-point lead at the break.Jessica Hanato, Amanda Adams and Hina Kimitete scored in double figures for UHH with 14, 13 and 11, respectively.
Chaminade (0-1) struggled from the field with a 28.8 shooting percentage.
