No leis allowed at Notre Dame
Notre Dame students had planned to go all-out tomorrow in an effort to help recruit Punahou linebacker Manti Te'o.According to a report on the Los Angeles Times' Web site, Te'o will visit the South Bend, Ind., campus this weekend and attend the Fighting Irish's game against Syracuse.
The Times reported that students had concocted a plan to hand out 8,000 leis at the game, but the Notre Dame athletic department told them not to, citing possible violations of NCAA rules.
"I received a communication from somebody wanting to do something — and you can gather what that is — in the way of showing support and encouragement for a prospect that may be visiting," Notre Dame compliance director Mike Karwoski told the Times yesterday.
"I responded back with an e-mail to the inquiry I received saying, we don't think this is permissible, and this is why we don't think it's permissible."
Meanwhile, "Tom Lemmings Prep Report," which airs on CBS College Sports Network, will announce tonight that Te'o is its national player of the year.
The show is available on the Dish Network and DIRECTV.
Collins-Parker honored by NCAA
Former Hawaiii All-American Deitre Collins-Parker, the first volleyball player to win the Broderick Cup as the nation's top female college athlete, yesterday was named to the NCAA's Silver Anniversary class.Collins-Parker is one of six outstanding former student-athletes recognized for professional achievements on the 25th anniversary of completing their college eligibility. Also named were former BYU quarterback Steve Young, Harvard hockey player Mark Fusco, Georgia gymnast Dr. Kathryn McMinn and Texas A&I football and track star Darrell Green.
Collins-Parker will also be inducted into the AVCA Hall of Fame next month. She was a three-time All-American for the Rainbow Wahine, helping them to back-to-back NCAA championships in 1982 and '83. Collins-Parker was a middle blocker for the U.S. Olympic team in 1988.
Everett to teach at Hawaii Pacific
ESPN sportscaster Neil Everett will teach a sports media class in the spring semester at Hawaii Pacific University.The course will help students understand the basic principles and skills in reporting, anchoring and production within a professional setting. The class will examine the fundamentals of sports media from both the sports reporter's and anchor's perspective.
Everett was the sports anchor at KGMB before making the leap to Bristol, Conn., where he has been a sportscaster for ESPN's SportsCenter since 2000.
Everett, who earned a journalism degree at the University of Oregon, also worked for HPU for 15 years, serving as sports information director and then assistant athletics director for special events and compliance.
Warrior golf signs 2
Henry Park of Kealakehe High School and Alexander Chu of Maryknoll High School signed national letters of intent to join the University of Hawaii golf team for the 2009-2010 season, coach Ronn Miyashiro announced yesterday.Park, a two-time Big Island Interscholastic Federation first-team selection, sat out the 2008 season after transferring from Waiakea High School. In 2007, Park tied for fifth in the state championship at Waikoloa after a fourth-place finish the year before.
Chu was a three-time All-Interscholastic League of Honolulu pick. As a junior, he tied for fifth at the state championships.

Seasiders fall in first round
The Brigham Young University-Hawaii women's volleyball season came to an abrupt end as the Seasiders fell to Cal State-San Bernardino, 25-14, 25-15, 25-12 in the opening round of the NCAA Division II West Regional tournament yesterday.The second-ranked Coyotes (26-3) dominated BYUH, hitting .506 for the match with only five hitting errors for the night.
Freshman Losaline Faka'osi led the Seasiders, whose season ended at 16-9, with nine kills. Faylynn Merrick, Agnes Tuilevuka and Ane Vea each added five kills, and senior LeeAnn Mapu put up 16 assists.
Pampulov honored for service
Hawaii Pacific men's and women's tennis coach Stefan Pampulov has been awarded the United States Tennis Association/ITA Community Service Outreach Award.Pampulov has been involved in after-school programs at Enchanted Lake Elementary School and helped implement the ITA Tennis On-Campus Program. He also participated in the USTA Tennis Weekend at Ala Moana Park and Central Oahu Regional Park.
The award honors an ITA coach for significant contributions in developing community-based tennis programs.

The Brigham Young University-Hawaii men's basketball team topped Winona (Minn.) State 92-80 at Laie last night.Whippy Marques led the Seasiders (2-0) with 12 points.
