Inside-out works in Kalaheo's win

Matt Gasparine-Young couldn't be stopped in the post.

The combination added up to a 66-60 victory for 10th-ranked Kalaheo over No. 5 Kaimuki last night at the Mustangs' gym.

Fernandez, a junior guard, drained seven 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 29 points as the Mustangs improved to 2-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East.

When Fernandez wasn't hitting from the outside, Gasparine-Young was producing in the paint in scoring 23 points, and both delivered big shots each time the Bulldogs threatened to seize momentum.

"I told (Fernandez) before the game, 'When you're open, shoot the open 3,'" Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado said. "As much as we want to be patient in the offense, with Kaimuki's zone and the big guys sitting in the post we needed some perimeter scoring. He's done it all preseason. He was just lighting it up."

With Fernandez and Gasparine-Young combining for 52 points, Kaimuki stayed close — despite center Desmond Tautofi being saddled with foul trouble for most of the night — but dropped to 0-2 in league play following a loss to Kahuku.

"Both of those teams are very good, but we didn't play well tonight," Kaimuki coach Kelly Grant said.

"We said from the beginning (Fernandez) is a shooter and he hits seven 3-pointers. Our guys should know you cannot double down when he's on the wing. (Gasparine-Young) was dominating inside, nobody was blocking him out. ... It's easy, correctable stuff we need to work on."

Fernandez hit four 3-pointers in the first half on his way to 16 points, the last trey giving Kalaheo a 24-14 lead at the 5:13 mark of the second quarter.

"In warmups I wasn't shooting too well," Fernandez said. "I missed the first one and after that it felt good."

Kaimuki answered with a 10-2 run and closed to within two when Tevin Nishiyama knocked down a 3-pointer while being knocked to the floor. His free throw to complete the four-point play closed the Mustangs' lead to 26-24.

The Bulldogs surged ahead in the third quarter to take a 33-31 lead on a three-point play by Ryan Kakitani.

But Fernandez responded immediately with his sixth 3-pointer. After a layup by David Taulung to put Kaimuki ahead again, Fernandez drained No. 7 to give Kalaheo a 37-35 lead.

"It's a credit to the rest of our guys for going to (Fernandez and Gasparine-Young)," Furtado said, "recognizing where the hot hand is."

Kalaheo maintained a cushion the rest of the way, though the Bulldogs continued to hang close in the fourth quarter, cutting an eight-point deficit to three when Nishiyama hit a 3-pointer with 37 seconds left.

But the Mustangs were able to hang on despite some shaky free-throw shooting that left them at 14-for-27 for the game.

Kalaheo next heads to the North Shore to face Kahuku tomorrow.

The Red Raiders, led by Nehoa Akina's 14 first-half points, outscored the Cougars 45-15 in the first half.

Kaiser managed just two points in the first quarter.
