Kauai stings Honokaa to advance to today's D-II semifinals

Kauai made it an early night for the contingent that followed the Red Raiders from the Garden Isle. But not before giving their red-clad supporters their money's worth.

The top-seeded Red Raiders took control with a six-run second inning and limited Honokaa to two hits in an 11-0 win in the Division II quarterfinals of the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA State Baseball Championship yesterday at Hans L'Orange Park.
The game was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule. Kauai advances to face Molokai in a semifinal game today.
"We're here for a reason," Kauai coach Hank Ibia said. "You see all how many parents we have supporting us. Everybody spent a lot of money coming here and we want to make the best of it."
Kauai pitchers Dalton Miyasato and Shea Shimabukuro gave up one single each to Honokaa's Kaili Birch and combined to throw just 67 pitches for the defending D-II state champion.
After a scoreless first inning, Kauai broke out for eight runs in the next two frames to give Miyasato a comfortable cushion.
Shimabukuro had three strikeouts in two innings of relief.
"The first inning I had a lot of adrenaline, so that helped me slow down and throw some strikes," Miyasato said.
Honokaa, the fourth seed from the Big Island Interscholastic Federation, reached the quarterfinals by rallying for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in a wild win over Radford on Wednesday night.
Kauai made sure the Dragons wouldn't have that chance again.
The Red Raiders loaded the bases with nobody out in the second inning and broke on top when Dayne Murata drew a walk and ninth-place hitter Taran Tani drilled a two-run single up the middle.
Jordan Leanio's sacrifice fly brought in the fourth run and Kauai added two more on a passed ball and a hit batter with the bases loaded.
The Red Raiders added two more runs in the third by stringing together three straight doubles with two out in the fifth to move over the 10-run mark.
The Red Raiders are looking forward to a rematch of last year's state Division II state tournament against Molokai.
