Punahou captured its first state football championship last night with a 38-7 drubbing of Leilehua in the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Division I title game at Aloha Stadium.

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu champs snuffed the Mules behind 518 yards of total offense and a punishing defense that limited the defending state champions to 211.

It was the first title of any kind for Punahou beyond an ILH championship. The Buffanblu never won a Prep Bowl.

Punahou’s point total was the highest for any team in 10 years of state championship games.

There would be no comeback this time for Leilehua, which upset previously unbeaten Saint Louis in the title game last year. Quarterback Andrew Manley was pressured from all angles into a 30-for-54 night with 205 yards and four interceptions against one touchdown.

It was Leilehua’s lowest point total of the season.

The Buffanblu scored on their first drive on a 28-yard pass from Cayman Shutter to Mark Silverstein, followed by a Shutter keeper for a 14-0 lead.

Punahou (12-1) scored again on a 38-yard Dalton Hilliard run. The Mules cut the lead to 21-7  at halftime after Manley hit Rico Newman for a 5-yard scoring pass as the clock expired. It would be the only points for Leilehua (11-3), as the Buffanblu scored 17 unanswered in the second half.

In the early game, ‘Iolani captured its third Division II state title in four years with a 35-20 defeat of Radford. Kellen Imada ran for 119 yards and two touchdowns and Kela Marciel sprung loose for a 70-yard score to make it an ILH sweep for the night.
